Sri Lankan workers in Lebanon cook for displaced families

In a powerful display of humanity and solidarity, Sri Lankan migrant workers in Beirut have come together to support families displaced by ongoing conflict, using their only day off to prepare and distribute food to those in need.

Despite working long hours as domestic helpers under challenging conditions, many of these workers earn modest wages and have limited personal time. Yet, driven by empathy and a shared sense of hardship, they pooled their savings to purchase essential items including rice, cheese, onions, and bottled water.

The group spent their day off cooking meals together before heading out across parts of Beirut to distribute food among families forced to live in tents and on the streets בעקבות continued violence linked to the Israeli occupation of Lebanon and recent escalations.

In a video message circulating online, one worker captured the spirit behind the initiative, saying, “This could be us.” Her words reflect a deep understanding of vulnerability, as many migrant workers themselves live with uncertainty and limited protections.

Sri Lanka remains one of the key source countries for migrant domestic labour in Lebanon, with thousands of women employed in households across the country. Often working under restrictive conditions, their efforts to extend help beyond their own struggles have drawn widespread admiration.

This act of kindness highlights not only the resilience of Sri Lankan migrant workers but also their willingness to stand in solidarity with communities facing crisis—proving that even those with little can make a meaningful difference in times of need.
