All preschools across Sri Lanka will be required to complete official registration before July 1 this year, the government has announced.
Minister of Women and Child Affairs Saroja Savithri Paulraj confirmed that the registration requirement will apply to all existing preschools nationwide, as part of efforts to regulate early childhood education standards.
She further noted that going forward, it will be compulsory for any new preschool to obtain formal registration before being allowed to commence operations.
The Minister made these remarks while addressing an awareness programme held at the Matara District Secretariat, which focused on strengthening preschool education implementation under the Ministry’s mandate.
The initiative is aimed at improving quality control, ensuring standardised early education practices, and strengthening oversight of preschool institutions across the country.
Authorities say the move is part of broader reforms in the early childhood education sector, with increased emphasis on regulation, safety, and curriculum consistency.
