The Sri Lankan Cabinet has approved a proposal by the Minister of Science and Technology to establish an expert committee responsible for developing the country’s first National Space Policy.
The government said space technology is now a key driver of modern development, offering wide-ranging benefits in areas such as disaster management, communications, national security, environmental monitoring, and economic innovation.
Recognising the growing strategic importance of the sector, authorities stressed the need for a unified national framework to guide and coordinate future space-related activities.
The planned policy is expected to define Sri Lanka’s long-term approach to space technology, strengthen international cooperation, and improve the country’s participation in global space governance systems.
It will also ensure that all space-related initiatives comply with international laws, agreements, and technical standards, aligning Sri Lanka with global best practices in the sector.
