The Department of Meteorology has issued a warning for heavy showers exceeding 100mm across several parts of Sri Lanka, as a low-pressure area located to the northeast of the island continues to strengthen.
According to officials, the adverse weather conditions are expected to impact multiple regions, including the Western, Sabaragamuwa, Central, Uva, North-Western, and Northern provinces. Heavy rainfall is also likely in the districts of Galle, Trincomalee, and Batticaloa.
Authorities have urged the public to remain cautious and take necessary safety measures due to the risk of flooding, strong winds, and lightning associated with thundershowers. Residents in vulnerable areas are advised to closely monitor weather updates and avoid non-essential travel during severe conditions.
Meanwhile, a Level 2 landslide warning has been issued for the Passara Divisional Secretariat area in the Badulla District due to continuous rainfall affecting parts of the country.
The National Building Research Organisation (NBRO) stated that these warnings will remain in effect from 4:00 p.m. on May 11 until 4:00 p.m. on May 12.
In addition, Level 1 (Yellow) landslide alerts have been issued for several areas across six districts:
- Badulla District: Bandarawela Divisional Secretariat and surrounding areas
