Sri Lanka has officially rolled out a Digital Motor Insurance Card system, effective from May 1, 2026, marking the end of traditional printed insurance cards for vehicles.
The initiative was introduced through a coordinated effort by the Insurance Regulatory Commission of Sri Lanka (IRCSL), the Sri Lanka Insurance Association, and other key stakeholders in the insurance sector.
According to the Police Media Division, motorists will now be able to access proof of insurance digitally via a mobile application provided by insurance companies. A printed insurance card will still be available, but only upon request.
The system is integrated with the newly launched National Insurance Verification System, enabling both authorities and the public to quickly verify vehicle insurance status in real time.
Verification can be done through multiple channels:
- Dialling the USSD code *1338#
- Sending the vehicle or insurance number via SMS to 1338
- Calling the hotline 1338 for assistance
Officials confirmed that all verification services under the new system will be provided free of charge.
