Amazon has introduced the United Kingdom’s first retail drone delivery service as part of a limited pilot programme in Darlington.
The service is designed to deliver small parcels weighing up to 5lb (2.2kg), covering everyday online orders within a 7.5-mile (12km) radius of an Amazon fulfilment centre. Customers can receive their items in as little as two hours, marking a significant step in faster last-mile delivery innovation.
At present, the system can handle around 10 drone flights per hour, translating to approximately 100 deliveries per day on weekdays. The company has indicated that operations could scale further depending on demand and performance during the trial period.
While drone technology has already been used in the UK for medical supplies and postal services, this marks the first time it is being tested for regular online retail shopping deliveries.
Darlington is currently the only location outside the United States where Amazon is experimenting with this service, and the programme remains in an early testing phase as the company evaluates its long-term feasibility and expansion potential.
