A discussion between Prabath Chandrakeerthi, Chief of Staff to the President, and Matthew Duckworth, Australia’s High Commissioner to Sri Lanka, took place at the Presidential Secretariat on the morning of March 23.
According to the President’s Media Division, the meeting highlighted the enduring and close relationship shared by Sri Lanka and Australia, with both sides reaffirming their commitment to further strengthening cooperation.
A key focus of the talks was on opportunities for Sri Lankans in Australia, particularly in the areas of education and employment. These aspects were explored in detail, reflecting the growing people-to-people connections between the two nations.
The High Commissioner also emphasized the strong links between the two countries in sectors such as education and cricket, noting their shared interests and collaborations. In addition, both parties exchanged views on regional challenges, including efforts to combat human smuggling and drug trafficking across the Indian Ocean.
Australia’s willingness to support Sri Lanka in areas such as education, agriculture, and sustainable development was also reiterated during the meeting. The High Commissioner further observed that the ongoing tensions in the Middle East have had broader global implications, including for Australia.
The meeting was also attended by Australia’s Deputy High Commissioner Ruth Baird and Second Secretary Matthew Lord.
