Iran Signals Readiness to Provide Fuel Aid to Sri Lanka

Iran has expressed its readiness to provide emergency fuel supplies and essential goods to Sri Lanka, offering assistance as concerns grow over energy security due to escalating tensions in the Middle East.

Speaking at a media briefing in Colombo on March 23, Iran’s Ambassador to Sri Lanka, Alireza Delkhosh, stated that Tehran is prepared to step in if Sri Lanka faces shortages or disruptions. He emphasised that Iran considers Sri Lanka a friendly nation and would respond positively to any request for support.

The Ambassador noted that Iran remains committed to ensuring that Sri Lanka’s energy needs are met, even as uncertainties surrounding global oil routes increase. Addressing concerns about the Strait of Hormuz, a vital channel for global oil shipments, he explained that while restrictions may apply to adversarial nations, access for friendly countries such as Sri Lanka would continue. He added that Iran could even provide assistance to ensure safe passage for vessels if necessary.

His remarks come in the wake of the recent sinking of the Iranian naval vessel IRIS Dena, which Tehran claims was targeted by a United States submarine far from any active conflict zone. According to Delkhosh, the vessel had not been engaged in military operations at the time and had previously participated in peaceful exercises in India before being invited to Sri Lankan waters for a goodwill visit.

He alleged that the attack occurred without warning and stated that many of those who lost their lives were not combat personnel. Iranian officials have reported that over 100 unarmed sailors were killed in the incident.

Responding to reports that the ship had sought urgent entry into Sri Lankan waters before the incident, the Ambassador said there was no confirmed documentation available to verify those claims. However, he stressed that international humanitarian principles require all nations to assist vessels in distress, regardless of political alignment.

On the condition of injured personnel from IRIS Dena and IRIS Bushehr, Delkhosh said most are recovering well, with only a few still in critical condition. He also noted that Iranian personnel currently in Sri Lanka are being treated well, though many are eager to reunite with their families. Discussions are ongoing with Sri Lankan authorities to facilitate their return.

The Ambassador further revealed that more than 100 Iranian sailors had already been repatriated from India, and efforts are continuing to ensure the safe return of others. He expressed appreciation for the hospitality extended by Sri Lanka during this period.

Beyond the immediate situation, Delkhosh assured that Sri Lankans residing in Iran remain safe, adding that arrangements could be made to assist their return if needed. He also mentioned that the Tea-for-Oil barter agreement between the two countries has been temporarily paused due to operational disruptions but is expected to resume once conditions stabilise.

As of now, Sri Lanka’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs has not issued an official statement regarding Iran’s offer or the developments surrounding the naval incident.
