A recent report by Statistics Canada shows that a large share of Canadian youth are spending more time on screens than recommended. The study tracked the same group from 2019 to 2023 and found that around 37% exceeded screen time limits in both years, while only a small portion consistently stayed within guidelines.
According to the Canadian 24-Hour Movement Guidelines, young people should limit recreational screen use to under two hours a day. Boys were slightly more likely than girls to go beyond these limits.
The findings also suggest a link between screen habits and well-being. Those who followed the guidelines reported better mental health, lower stress, and fewer body image concerns. They were also more likely to achieve higher academic results compared to those who regularly exceeded recommended screen time.
