Europe may be on the brink of a fuel supply crunch if tensions involving Iran continue to escalate, according to Wael Sawan, the head of Shell plc. He warned that disruptions to major oil routes—especially the Strait of Hormuz—could quickly limit fuel availability across the region.
The vital waterway carries a significant share of the world’s oil, meaning any interruption could rapidly affect European refineries and distribution systems. Energy firms are increasingly preparing for worst-case scenarios, including supply shocks and logistical breakdowns, as global tensions rise.
Despite efforts to reduce reliance on certain suppliers, Europe remains vulnerable due to its dependence on international shipping routes. Limited reserves and tight supply margins mean even short disruptions could lead to shortages, price spikes, and emergency measures.
While no immediate crisis has occurred, the warning highlights growing concerns that energy security is becoming a critical issue once again amid geopolitical instability.
