Saudi Arabia Launches Driverless Bus for Hajj Pilgrims

Saudi Arabia has launched a pilot self-driving RoboBus shuttle service inside the inner courtyard of Quba Mosque in Madinah as part of its wider push for smart and sustainable transport.

The initiative has been rolled out by the Transport General Authority in cooperation with the Madinah Region Development Authority.

The RoboBus is an electric, driverless minibus with capacity for up to 20 passengers. It operates on an advanced artificial intelligence system supported by modern sensors, high-resolution cameras, and LiDAR, allowing it to move through the mosque’s surroundings while maintaining high safety standards for both passengers and pedestrians.

Officials say the pilot project is meant to test the service’s readiness at an important religious site, measure operational efficiency and service quality, and improve the overall user experience before self-driving vehicles are deployed more widely in Saudi cities.

The route has been carefully designed to cover 700 meters within the inner courtyard of Quba Mosque, helping visitors and worshippers move more easily through a fully automated transport system.

The trial will continue for 60 days, during which authorities will test how well the vehicle integrates with surrounding infrastructure and collect field data using high-resolution digital maps.
