Sri Lanka’s emerging javelin talent Rumesh Tharanga delivered a spectacular performance at the Champions Track & Field Meet on Saturday, setting a new national record with a throw of 89.37 metres at the Mahinda Rajapaksa Stadium.
The 22-year-old achieved the record on his final attempt after a series of impressive throws that demonstrated remarkable consistency. He opened the competition with a throw of 78.39m, then exceeded 83 metres four times with throws of 83.35m, 83.68m, 84.33m, and 84.62m, before topping it with his 89.37m mark, surpassing his previous national record of 86.50m, which is currently pending ratification.
This achievement also propelled Tharanga to the top of the world seasonal rankings, improving on his earlier season-best of 83.07m, recorded in Australia in February. His steady improvement over recent months has cemented his status as one of the leading javelin throwers globally this season.
Tharanga first gained international attention last year when he reached the final at the World Championships, becoming the first Sri Lankan track and field athlete in 19 years to do so since Susanthika Jayasinghe claimed a bronze medal in the 200m.
At the Tokyo World Championships, Tharanga finished seventh, outpacing several top athletes, including Olympic champions Neeraj Chopra and Arshad Nadeem. Under the guidance of coach Tony Prasanna, the former St. Peter’s College athlete continues to impress with his consistent international performances, signaling a bright future for Sri Lankan athletics.
