Sri Lanka’s Prime Minister Harini Amarasuriya held talks with Shirley Ayorkor Botchwey, the Secretary-General of the Commonwealth of Nations, during a meeting at Marlborough House on Thursday.
The discussion took place as part of the Prime Minister’s official visit to London, where she is attending the 43rd Board of Governors Meeting of the Commonwealth of Learning in 2026.
According to the Prime Minister’s Office, the meeting focused on strengthening cooperation and advancing shared priorities within the Commonwealth. Both leaders explored opportunities to deepen collaboration across a range of key areas.
During the talks, Prime Minister Amarasuriya expressed gratitude for the Commonwealth’s continued engagement with Sri Lanka and acknowledged the Secretary-General’s efforts to enhance the organisation’s impact and relevance among member states.
Key topics on the agenda included climate change, access to climate financing, democratic governance, and increasing women’s representation in politics. The discussions also highlighted ongoing Commonwealth support initiatives for member countries.
The Prime Minister reaffirmed Sri Lanka’s commitment to building resilience, promoting sustainable development, and ensuring inclusive governance. She also welcomed the continued assistance provided by the Commonwealth Secretariat.
In response, the Secretary-General reiterated the Commonwealth’s readiness to support Sri Lanka through technical expertise, capacity-building programmes, and collaboration in areas such as climate finance and electoral processes.
Both sides also exchanged views on upcoming Commonwealth engagements and stressed the importance of stronger cooperation among member nations to tackle shared global challenges.
Sri Lanka’s High Commissioner to the UK, Nimal Senadeera, along with senior officials from the Sri Lankan High Commission, accompanied the Prime Minister during the meeting.
