Near Miss: Lotto Winner’s $2.8M Ticket Survives Wash Cycle

A man from Belmont, Western Australia, narrowly avoided a disastrous blunder when he accidentally put his $2.8 million winning lottery ticket through the washing machine.

In a stroke of luck, a man from Belmont, Western Australia, narrowly averted a potentially costly mistake when he forgot to remove his $2.8 million winning Saturday Lotto ticket from his trouser pockets before doing laundry. The unnamed winner, described as being in his late 20s, purchased the ticket from Here’s Luck Lottery Centre in the Belmont Forum, only to realize his oversight moments before the wash cycle began.

Fortunately, the man quickly halted the machine and retrieved the ticket, ensuring its safety. Overwhelmed by the unexpected windfall, he expressed his relief and disbelief upon claiming his prize at Lotterywest headquarters.

James Mooney, a spokesperson for Lotterywest, emphasized the importance of registering tickets to prevent similar mishaps, noting that the fortunate outcome serves as a reminder for players to safeguard their tickets diligently. The Belmont winner joins a select group of division one Superdraw winners across Australia, contributing to the more than $3.8 million raised for Lotterywest’s grants program from ticket sales during the recent draw.
