Manchester City claimed the first major trophy of the English season on Sunday, defeating Arsenal 2-0 in the League Cup final, thanks to two second-half headers from rising star Nico O’Reilly.
Arsenal, currently topping the Premier League, were widely seen as favourites to lift their first trophy since 2020. However, City’s superior performance on the day left no doubt about the deserving winners. This triumph marks Manchester City’s ninth League Cup title, further cementing their domestic dominance under manager Pep Guardiola.
The first half ended in a goalless stalemate, with both sides struggling to create clear-cut opportunities. The breakthrough came after the interval when O’Reilly seized on a rare error by Arsenal goalkeeper Kepa Arrizabalaga, heading the ball into the net on the hour mark.
Only four minutes later, O’Reilly doubled the lead, meeting a precise cross from Matheus Nunes to make it 2-0 and effectively secure the victory. Arsenal tried to respond, hitting the crossbar late in the game, but lacked the creativity and cohesion to mount a serious comeback, ending discussions of a potential quadruple for the north London side.
The win not only delivers City their first silverware of the season but also highlights O’Reilly’s growing importance to Guardiola’s squad as a decisive contributor in crucial matches.
