A prison jailer and a guard have been taken into custody by Sri Lanka Police’s Borella Police in connection with the death of an inmate at Magazine Prison in Colombo.
Police said further investigations are being carried out by the Borella Police, the Colombo Crimes Division, and the Colombo South Division Criminal Investigation Unit. The inquiries were initiated on the instructions of the Inspector General of Police (IGP) and are being overseen by the Deputy Inspector General (DIG) of the Colombo Division.
The incident reportedly followed an altercation between two inmates and a prison guard, during which all three individuals sustained injuries and were admitted to the prison hospital.
One of the inmates later succumbed to his injuries. The deceased has been identified as a 37-year-old resident of Navagampura.
Police further stated that he had been held in remand custody in connection with a narcotics possession case.
