New rules restrict classroom screen use in Los Angeles schools

The governing board of the Los Angeles Unified School District has approved a new policy aimed at managing how much time students spend on screens during classroom activities, citing growing concerns about the impact of excessive technology use on children’s health and development.

The decision, passed unanimously with one member abstaining, positions the district—one of the largest in the United States—as an early adopter of structured, grade-specific limits on screen exposure in schools. Officials say the move builds on earlier steps, including a cellphone restriction policy introduced in 2024.

Board member Nick Melvoin, who backed the proposal, said the district hopes to set an example nationwide by addressing the balance between digital learning and student well-being.

Supporters of the measure emphasize that while technology remains an essential tool in modern education, overuse may negatively affect students’ focus, social skills, and emotional health. The shift comes after years of increased reliance on laptops and tablets, particularly following the transition to online learning during the COVID-19 pandemic.

Research referenced in the policy highlights risks linked to prolonged screen exposure, including vision issues, anxiety, reduced attention span, and lower academic performance. Findings from the American Academy of Pediatrics also suggest that children who exceed recommended screen time are more likely to face challenges such as obesity and diminished cognitive outcomes.

Rather than imposing immediate restrictions, the resolution directs district officials to develop age-appropriate guidelines in consultation with teachers, parents, and health experts. Current school-level rules will remain in effect until a comprehensive framework is finalized.

However, some experts have urged caution, noting that any limits must consider students who depend on digital tools for accessibility and learning support.

As schools continue to navigate the role of technology in education, the district’s approach reflects a broader effort to balance innovation with student health and academic success.
