Iran’s national football team is continuing preparations for the upcoming World Cup, but its final participation will depend on a government decision linked to security assurances in the United States, officials have confirmed.
According to Iran’s Sports and Youth Minister Ahmad Donyamali, the team will only travel if the safety of players is guaranteed during matches scheduled to be held in the US.
“If the safety of the national team’s players in the United States is ensured, we will travel to the World Cup,” Donyamali told Iran’s Tasnim News Agency.
He added that the final decision will be made at the highest levels of government, including the country’s Supreme National Security Council, highlighting the sensitivity surrounding the issue.
Iran’s national football team, commonly known as Team Melli, is expected to play all its group-stage matches in the United States, one of the co-hosts of the tournament alongside Canada and Mexico.
However, uncertainty has surrounded Iran’s participation following rising geopolitical tensions in the region. Concerns escalated after recent conflict developments involving Iran and Israel, raising questions about travel safety and diplomatic conditions.
Despite the uncertainty, preparations for the squad continue, while officials assess security risks and international arrangements ahead of the global tournament.
The situation remains under review, with a final announcement expected once the government completes its evaluation of safety and diplomatic factors affecting participation in the competition.
