In an era where healthcare systems worldwide are under immense pressure, Ben Maruthappu has emerged as one of the most impactful innovators in modern medicine. As the founder and CEO of Cera, he has transformed personal adversity into a groundbreaking solution that is reshaping the UK’s care sector.
A Personal Mission Turned National Impact
Maruthappu’s journey began with a deeply personal challenge—struggling to coordinate care for his own mother. Frustrated by inefficiencies in the system, he recognised a broader issue affecting millions of families across the UK. In 2016, he founded Cera with a clear mission: to fix the fragmented home care system and make healthcare more proactive, efficient, and patient-centred.
Today, that vision has scaled dramatically. Cera leverages advanced artificial intelligence to monitor patient data in real time, predict potential health risks, and intervene early. The result is a system that not only improves patient outcomes but also reduces pressure on hospitals.
Transforming Healthcare with AI
Cera’s AI-powered platform is now delivering measurable results at scale. By identifying early warning signs of deterioration, the company has helped reduce hospital admissions by over 50% in certain cases. This proactive approach is estimated to save the UK’s National Health Service more than £1 million per day, contributing to total savings exceeding £1 billion.
With around £300 million in annual revenue and supporting over 2 million patients each month, Cera has rapidly grown into one of Europe’s largest health technology platforms.
A Strong Academic Foundation
Born in London in 1988 to Sri Lankan Tamil parents, Maruthappu’s academic journey reflects both excellence and leadership. He studied preclinical medicine at Selwyn College, Cambridge, graduating with a rare triple first-class distinction.
During his time at Cambridge, he demonstrated early leadership by founding and supporting several charitable initiatives, including CONTACT and Medic to Medic. Notably, he became the first undergraduate invited to lecture medical students—an early sign of his exceptional capabilities.
He later pursued clinical medicine at Green Templeton College, Oxford, where he founded the United Kingdom Medical Students’ Association (UKMSA), further showcasing his commitment to improving healthcare systems.
Maruthappu also expanded his global perspective as a Kennedy Scholar in Global Health at Harvard University, conducting research at the Center for Surgery and Public Health.
Redefining the Future of Care
What sets Maruthappu apart is not just his clinical expertise, but his ability to bridge medicine, technology, and entrepreneurship. Through Cera, he has helped shift healthcare from reactive treatment to preventative care—an approach increasingly seen as the future of global health systems.
His work stands as a powerful example of how innovation, when driven by purpose, can deliver both social impact and commercial success.
A Sri Lankan Connection Making Global Waves
For Sri Lankans around the world, Maruthappu’s achievements carry an added layer of pride. As the son of Sri Lankan Tamil parents, his rise reflects the global impact of the diaspora—combining resilience, education, and innovation to solve some of society’s biggest challenges.
