Fresh Details Released on Air Canada Incident at LaGuardia Airport

New information has come to light regarding the tragic incident at LaGuardia Airport, where an Air Canada aircraft collided with a fire truck, resulting in the deaths of both pilots.

The two pilots, identified as Antoine Forest and MacKenzie Gunther, are being recognized for their actions that likely prevented a far worse outcome. Clement Lelievre, a French passenger on the flight, told The Canadian Press that he believes the pilots’ quick reflexes saved lives, though he was unsure of the exact circumstances. Lelievre and many other passengers received immediate medical attention on-site, with about 40 transported to hospitals. According to the Toronto Star, 32 of those passengers have already been discharged.

Flight attendant Solange Tremblay was among those injured and is undergoing surgery for multiple leg fractures. Her daughter, Sarah Lepine, reported that Tremblay was discovered over 100 meters from the impact site, still secured in her jumpseat.

Authorities continue to investigate the cause of the crash. Both flight recorders have been recovered, but few details have been released regarding air traffic control or the events leading up to the collision. Preliminary reports suggest the fire truck may have been mistakenly cleared to cross the runway, prompting controllers to attempt a last-minute stop.

Concerns about air traffic safety at LaGuardia Airport have surfaced before. The Toronto Star notes that between January 2022 and January 2026, nine confidential reports were submitted to the Aviation Safety Reporting System highlighting critical “ground conflicts,” which allow pilots and controllers to anonymously report near-miss events.
