Environment Canada Issues Yellow-Level Alert Over Ice and Flooding Risk

Environment Canada has issued a yellow-level weather alert for parts of Ontario as a strong weather system is expected to bring heavy rain and freezing rain starting Sunday morning.

The advisory covers several regions, including Stratford, Guelph, Kitchener, Cambridge, Halton Hills, Vaughan, Niagara, Bracebridge, and surrounding areas. Officials warn that the combination of rainfall and frozen ground could significantly increase the risk of flooding and hazardous icy conditions.

Forecasts indicate total rainfall and freezing rain amounts ranging between 20 and 60 millimetres, with locally higher totals possible. In the Bracebridge–Gravenhurst area, ice accretion of 5 to 15 millimetres is expected on exposed surfaces, raising concerns about power outages and property damage.

The system is expected to begin late Sunday morning or around noon in most areas, continuing overnight into Monday morning. In many regions, freezing rain is forecast to transition into rain as temperatures rise above freezing.

Environment Canada warns that roads and walkways may become slippery and dangerous, while localized flooding could make some roads impassable. The added weight of ice may cause damage to trees, buildings, and utility infrastructure, potentially leading to prolonged power outages.

Residents are advised to clear storm drains where possible, avoid driving through flooded areas, and stay away from low-lying locations such as rivers and culverts. Moving valuables to higher levels of homes is also recommended.
