The Commission to Investigate Allegations of Bribery or Corruption (CIABOC) has refiled a case before the Colombo High Court against former Central Bank Governor Ajith Nivard Cabraal, alleging financial losses linked to controversial Greek Treasury bond investments made in 2012.
According to the allegations, the investment was made when Greece was facing a severe economic crisis, resulting in an estimated loss of more than Rs. 1.84 billion to the Sri Lankan government.
Case reactivated over court condition breach
The case has been reintroduced under Section 67(5) of the Anti-Corruption Act after the accused reportedly failed to comply with a prior court condition requiring the deposit of Rs. 100 million within three months.
Although earlier proceedings had been moved toward withdrawal on the condition of payment, CIABOC has resumed legal action after the required deposit was not made within the stipulated timeframe.
Legal proceedings continue
With the refiled case now active, the matter is expected to proceed before the Colombo High Court as authorities continue their investigation into the alleged investment decision and its financial impact on public funds.
The case highlights ongoing scrutiny of past financial decisions made during Cabraal’s tenure at the Central Bank.
