First-time Oscar nominee Michael B. Jordan won the Best Actor award on Sunday for his dual portrayal of twin brothers in the genre-blending vampire drama “Sinners.”
On stage, Jordan thanked director Ryan Coogler for giving him the chance to bring the characters to life, and paid tribute to pioneers who paved the way in Hollywood, including Sidney Poitier, Will Smith, Denzel Washington, and Jamie Foxx, as well as his own ancestors. He promised to keep challenging himself and striving for excellence, while expressing gratitude to audiences who have watched Sinners repeatedly.
In the film, Jordan plays Elijah “Smoke” Moore and Elias “Stack” Moore, war veterans trying to use stolen money to open a juke joint in Mississippi during the Great Depression. NPR praised his performance, noting that he gives each brother a distinct identity while keeping them in sync, delivering a thick Southern drawl that flows effortlessly with the dialogue.
The California-born actor, raised in New Jersey, rose to fame with Coogler’s Fruitvale Station and is known for his role as Donnie Creed in the Rocky spin-off series, including directing Creed III. He has also portrayed Killmonger in the Black Panther franchise and appeared in a related TV series.
This year’s Best Actor category also included nominees Timothée Chalamet (Marty Supreme), Leonardo DiCaprio (One Battle After Another), Ethan Hawke (Blue Moon), and Wagner Moura (The Secret Agent).
