Legendary Bollywood playback singer Asha Bhosle was admitted to Breach Candy Hospital in Mumbai on Saturday.
According to sources cited by Press Trust of India, the 92-year-old artiste was hospitalised after suffering a cardiac arrest along with respiratory complications.
Widely regarded as one of the most iconic voices in Indian music, Asha Bhosle’s career spans more than seven decades. Although she began her journey alongside her elder sister Lata Mangeshkar, she went on to establish a unique identity defined by versatility and bold musical expression.
Her ability to seamlessly move across genres set her apart. From romantic ballads and lively cabaret numbers to ghazals and pop tracks, she showcased remarkable range. Her collaborations with O. P. Nayyar produced memorable songs like Aao Huzoor Tumko, while her work with R. D. Burman led to enduring classics such as Chura Liya Hai Tumne Jo Dil Ko.
She also redefined the sound of Hindi film music in the 1960s and 1970s with energetic and expressive tracks like Piya Tu Ab Toh Aaja and Yeh Mera Dil. At the same time, she demonstrated her classical strength through songs such as In Aankhon Ki Masti and Dil Cheez Kya Hai.
In the 1990s and early 2000s, she successfully reinvented her musical style, working with A. R. Rahman on popular tracks like Tanha Tanha and Rangeela Re. She also ventured into the Indipop space, with hits such as Kabhi To Nazar Milao, continuing to appeal to newer audiences.
Throughout her illustrious career, Asha Bhosle has received numerous prestigious honours, including the Dadasaheb Phalke Award and the Padma Vibhushan. She has also won National Film Awards for her performances in films like Umrao Jaan and Ijaazat.
