‘Terafab’: Elon Musk Moves to Develop Proprietary AI Chips

Elon Musk has unveiled an ambitious plan to produce cutting-edge chips for artificial intelligence, robotics, and data centers through a new facility called “Terafab” near Austin, Texas. The project aims to generate an astonishing one terawatt of computing power annually—equivalent to one trillion watts—just slightly below the total electricity generation capacity of the United States.

The initiative will be a joint effort between Tesla and SpaceX. Musk did not reveal the exact initial investment, though prior reports have estimated it could range between $20 billion and $25 billion.

Despite having no background in semiconductor manufacturing, Musk emphasized that Terafab is essential to meet the growing computing demands of his companies, which are expected to surpass what global chip suppliers can provide.

“We’re grateful to our current partners, including Samsung, TSMC, and Micron… but their production expansion has limits,” Musk said. “Their maximum output is still below what we require… so we’re going to build the Terafab ourselves.”

The move highlights Musk’s strategy to secure a self-sufficient supply of high-performance chips, ensuring Tesla and SpaceX remain at the forefront of AI and robotics technology.
