Australia’s Winter Olympics Campaign Hit as Cam Bolton Suffers Broken Neck in Training
Australia’s Olympic squad has been dealt a heavy blow after veteran snowboarder Cam Bolton was airlifted to a hospital in Milan following a training accident that ended his Winter Games bid.
The 35-year-old, competing in his fourth Olympics, crashed on Monday while preparing for the snowboard cross event. He experienced increasing neck pain the following day, prompting medical attention.
Scans revealed two fractures, and Bolton was transported by helicopter, accompanied by a team official, for further treatment.
Team chef de mission Alisa Camplin reassured fans, saying Bolton remained in good spirits despite the severity of his injury and was supported by his wife throughout the ordeal.
“Cam wanted his teammates to know he was okay and being well cared for,” Camplin said from Livigno. “We’ve ensured the highest level of support and communication throughout this process.”
Bolton’s injury is the fourth to hit the Australian team at the Games. Aerials medal hopeful Laura Peel suffered a knee injury during a pre-Olympics training camp, young freeskier Daisy Thomas also injured her knee in a fall, and snowboard halfpipe athlete Misaki Vaughan was ruled out after failing a head injury assessment.
