From Captain to Coach: Jayasuriya’s Sri Lanka Journey Nears Its End After T20 World Cup

Sri Lanka National Cricket Team Head Coach Sanath Jayasuriya has announced his decision to step down from his role following the conclusion of the upcoming ICC Men’s T20 World Cup. Speaking to Ada Derana, Jayasuriya confirmed that while his contract as Head Coach remains valid, he does not intend to continue in the position beyond the tournament.

Jayasuriya first took charge of the team as an interim Head Coach during Sri Lanka’s series against India in July 2024. Following the team’s performance and internal evaluations, he was later appointed as the full-time Head Coach towards the end of the same year.

Under Jayasuriya’s leadership, the national team played a total of 60 international matches across all formats, achieving 29 victories and 29 defeats, with two matches ending without a result. His tenure saw a mix of highs and lows, with the team demonstrating competitive performances in both bilateral series and ICC tournaments.

Reflecting on his coaching journey, Jayasuriya expressed gratitude for the opportunity to guide the national team and acknowledged the support of the players, coaching staff, and cricket board. While he did not specify his future plans, his decision marks the end of a significant chapter in Sri Lanka cricket, as the team prepares for the T20 World Cup under his final guidance.

The Sri Lanka Cricket Board is expected to begin the process of identifying a successor in the coming months, ensuring a smooth transition as the team looks to build momentum for upcoming international assignments and major ICC tournaments.
