Sri Lanka’s doctors will begin limiting several essential services across all hospitals starting tomorrow, as part of a trade union action launched in response to unresolved concerns within the country’s health sector.
Doctors across Sri Lanka will restrict several important medical services from tomorrow (Monday, 17), including the issuing of prescriptions for medicines to be purchased from outside pharmacies and recommending laboratory tests to be conducted at private facilities.
The Government Medical Officers’ Association (GMOA) announced that this islandwide trade union action is being carried out to protest the government’s continued failure to resolve critical issues within the health sector, as well as concerns raised by medical professionals regarding next year’s budget proposals.
According to the GMOA, repeated attempts were made to inform health authorities about these pressing issues, but no satisfactory solutions were provided. Due to this lack of progress, the union decided to initiate action across the country.
GMOA Secretary Dr. Prabath Sugathadasa stated that the trade union measures will officially begin at 8 a.m. tomorrow, impacting all hospitals nationwide. The association maintains that the decision was necessary to draw attention to long-standing challenges affecting both healthcare workers and the delivery of medical services.
