A state ceremony marking the “Walk for Peace in the Island of Peace” was held on Tuesday (28) evening at Independence Square under the patronage of President Anura Kumara Dissanayake.
During the event, the President formally presented a sacred sapling taken from the revered Sri Maha Bodhi to members of the Maha Sangha who had arrived from the United States in an official and diplomatic capacity.
The sapling was ceremonially handed over as part of the concluding proceedings of the peace initiative, symbolising harmony, spiritual unity, and the global extension of Buddhist heritage rooted in Sri Lanka.
The delegation receiving the sapling was led by Venerable Pannakara Thero of Vietnam, reflecting the international religious participation associated with the event. The occasion highlighted the cultural and spiritual significance of the Sri Maha Bodhi, one of the most sacred sites in Buddhism, and its role in promoting messages of peace beyond national borders.
The ceremony formed a key moment in the Walk for Peace programme, reinforcing themes of reconciliation, interfaith understanding, and shared spiritual values among participating nations and communities.
