In a joint initiative between the Sri Lankan Embassy in Riyadh and the Trinity College Kandy Old Boys’ Association in Saudi Arabia (TCK OBA KSA), the first-ever “Ambassador’s Cup” Badminton Tournament was held on 2nd May 2025 at the Saudi International Courts in Riyadh.
The event marked a significant celebration of the 50th anniversary of diplomatic relations between Sri Lanka and Saudi Arabia and attracted over 120 players from across the Sri Lankan community, grouped into six teams. After intense rounds of competition, the tournament culminated in an exciting final, with the winners proudly lifting the prestigious inaugural Ambassador’s Trophy.
Ambassador Ameer Ajwad praised the initiative, highlighting how such events foster unity, sportsmanship, and cultural connection within the Sri Lankan diaspora. He extended his gratitude to the TCK OBA KSA for their commitment to community welfare and collaboration with the Embassy.
President of TCK OBA KSA, Ruxshan Juhardeen, spoke on the significance of the tournament, stating it embodies the enduring spirit of Trinity College and the vibrancy of the Sri Lankan community in the Kingdom. He also expressed hopes of turning the tournament into an annual tradition.
All participants received certificates of recognition signed by the Ambassador, while the winners were awarded trophies to mark their achievement.
This follows last year’s successful Ambassador’s Cup Cricket Tournament, which saw 25 Sri Lankan teams take part — further cementing the commitment to sports diplomacy and community engagement in the Kingdom.
