Massive bushfire in Victoria engulfs area the size of Singapore

Firefighters in Victoria are battling a massive bushfire in the Grampians National Park, which has scorched 74,000 hectares-equivalent to Singapore’s size.

State control centre spokesperson Luke Hegarty described the blaze as “roughly the size of Singapore,” speaking to ABC. The fire, located 240 kilometers west of Melbourne, has a perimeter exceeding 360 kilometers, making containment efforts particularly challenging.

“That means that we need to have walked or driven or flown the entire fire perimeter to be certain that we’ve got it under control, and that’s no easy task,” Hegarty said.

Although fire conditions are improving, authorities cautioned that the Grampians blaze remains difficult to control.

No fatalities or property losses have been reported, but several rural communities in the region have faced evacuations as smaller fires threatened homes earlier in the week.

Emergency services continue their efforts to bring the situation under control.
