Tesla Plans Budget-Friendly, Compact Electric Car

Tesla is reportedly working on a new, smaller and more affordable electric SUV, according to multiple sources familiar with the matter.

The company has recently been in discussions with suppliers to explore details of the compact SUV project, which is expected to be a completely new model rather than a variation of its existing Model 3 or Model Y. Talks have reportedly focused on production methods and specifications for key components.

According to several sources, the vehicle is likely to be manufactured in China, while production expansion in the United States and Europe is also being considered. The compact SUV is expected to measure around 4.28 meters in length, making it noticeably smaller than the Model Y.

The development comes after Tesla CEO Elon Musk previously halted work on a planned low-cost EV in 2024, shifting attention toward robotaxis and humanoid robotics. The renewed effort has raised questions about whether Tesla is returning to mass-market electric vehicles or aligning the model more closely with its autonomous driving strategy.

Some sources suggest the vehicle could be designed with flexibility in mind, allowing both human-driven and potential driverless configurations. This approach may help Tesla adapt to different regulatory environments and market demands worldwide.

The new model is also expected to feature a simpler configuration, including a single-motor setup, and a lighter build of around 1.5 metric tons—significantly less than the Model Y. Manufacturing is reportedly planned for Tesla’s Shanghai facility, although production timelines remain uncertain and are unlikely to begin within this year.

Tesla’s push comes amid ongoing discussions about its long-term strategy, as the company balances traditional EV sales with its ambitions in autonomous vehicles. While robotaxi development continues, analysts note that Tesla’s core revenue still largely depends on conventional electric cars.

In recent years, Musk had emphasized large-scale production targets and affordable EV plans, including a long-rumored $25,000 vehicle often referred to as the “Model 2.” However, that project was later shelved, with Tesla instead focusing on software-driven mobility solutions.

Although more affordable versions of existing models have been introduced, they have not significantly expanded Tesla’s customer base. The company continues to promote its future vision centered on self-driving technology and robotics, while gradually refining its vehicle lineup for broader market appeal.
