United Airlines Rolls Out Flat Couch-Style Seats for Economy Travelers

United Airlines has unveiled a new seating option for long-haul flights called United Relax Row, which allows three economy seats to convert into a flat “couch” for sleeping or stretching.

This innovative design is the first of its kind for a North American carrier, inspired by Air New Zealand’s Skycouch, which debuted on its Boeing 777-300ER in 2011. United now holds exclusive rights to offer this concept in North America.

The Relax Rows will be located between the United Economy and United Premium Plus cabins. Passengers selecting these seats will enjoy a custom-fitted mattress pad, additional pillows, and blankets, with the row transformed into a near-couch setup shortly after takeoff. United says the feature is ideal for families with young children, solo travelers seeking extra space, and couples wanting the comfort of economy with a little added luxury.

Although ticket pricing and booking details have not been released, it is expected that travelers will first purchase standard Economy tickets and then pay a fee to upgrade to a Relax Row during seat selection. Air New Zealand’s Skycouch, for example, allowed a solo traveler to buy the two adjacent seats, or couples to buy the remaining single seat, to access the full flat surface.

United plans to introduce the Relax Row in 2027 and expand the seating option to over 200 of its Boeing 787 and 777 wide-body aircraft by 2030. Each plane could feature up to 12 Relax Rows.

“Customers flying in United Economy on long-haul routes deserve more space and comfort, and Relax Row is one way to provide that,” said Andrew Nocella, Executive Vice President and Chief Commercial Officer of the airline.
