UAE weather: heavy rain sweeps across the country

A final surge of heavy rain and thunderstorms swept across the UAE on Friday, signaling the last phase of an unstable weather system. Cooler temperatures, gusty winds, and reduced visibility affected several parts of the country.

The National Centre of Meteorology reported that a deepening low-pressure system from the west continues to influence weather conditions, bringing cloudy to overcast skies, intermittent rainfall, and occasional heavy downpours accompanied by thunder, lightning, and winds reaching up to 60kph in exposed areas. These conditions have caused blowing dust and limited horizontal visibility.

Thursday saw heavy rain across Dubai, Sharjah, Ajman, Ras Al Khaimah, and Fujairah, along with thunderstorms and a notable drop in temperatures. Eastern wadis and mountain valleys experienced increased water flow due to lingering cloud activity from the previous weekend.

Rainfall totals recorded at key locations included:

  • 47.9mm in Al Tawiyeen
  • 39.7mm in Al Marjan
  • 33.3mm in Khor Fakkan
  • 31.6mm in Khatm Al Shakla

Friday Outlook:
Partly cloudy to cloudy skies are expected, with convective clouds bringing intermittent rain across most regions and further slight drops in temperature. Moderate to fresh winds will continue at 15–30kph, gusting up to 60kph in exposed areas, causing dust and reduced visibility. Sea conditions remain rough in the Arabian Gulf and Sea of Oman. Cloud cover should gradually decrease by Friday evening, with conditions improving from Saturday under north-westerly winds.

Weekend Forecast:
By Sunday and Monday, weather is expected to stabilize, with generally fair skies and improving sea conditions. Fresh winds may still trigger dust in certain areas.

Authorities Urge Caution:
UAE authorities have maintained high readiness, deploying emergency and field teams to monitor water accumulation, manage traffic flow, and respond promptly to incidents.
