UAE Artist Sarah R Jay Launches Rescue Initiative for Stray Animals

UAE-based singer Sarah R Jay has stepped beyond music to create a practical solution for the growing issue of abandoned animals, launching a platform aimed at making rescue efforts faster and more coordinated.

Speaking in an online interview, she explained that the idea came from noticing a serious gap in the current system. Animal rescue groups, she said, are under increasing pressure, while the number of abandoned pets continues to rise. Wanting to respond in a meaningful way, she set out to build a tool that allows people to act quickly when they encounter animals in distress.

The result is StraySpotter.com, a newly introduced digital platform that connects witnesses of injured or abandoned animals with nearby rescuers. The system is designed to be simple: users can report an animal, upload images, share its location, and indicate how urgent the situation is.

Using real-time location tracking similar to navigation apps, the platform notifies registered users within a 50-kilometre radius. It also includes a live chat feature, allowing rescuers to communicate instantly and organise responses without delay.

The need for such a tool is becoming increasingly evident across the UAE. Rescue groups have reported a noticeable rise in cases of pet abandonment, often linked to expatriates leaving the country without their animals. With relocation costs and procedures being complex and expensive, many pets are left behind—sometimes tied up in public places or abandoned in boxes with notes.

Sarah highlighted that shelters are already overwhelmed, with dozens of animals requiring care at any given time. Her own experience in rescue work has exposed her to the scale of the issue, reinforcing the urgency of finding a more efficient system.

While her music has previously touched on themes of animal welfare, this project marks her first step into building a real-world solution. She believes that while art can inspire empathy, technology can directly contribute to saving lives.

Each report submitted through the platform can include multiple images and detailed information about the animal’s condition, helping rescuers assess and respond effectively. The system is open to all types of cases, whether animals are injured, abandoned, or in immediate danger, with the goal of removing obstacles that might delay help.

At its core, the initiative is about bringing together scattered efforts into one organised network. By combining information, people, and action in one place, the platform aims to make rescue operations more efficient.

The project also has a personal dimension. Since 2019, Sarah and her father have been actively involved in rescuing and caring for animals, particularly cats, in Ras Al Khaimah. She describes the initiative as a way of giving back to the country that has supported them.

Although she continues her career as a musician, she is now focused on expanding the platform. She hopes to collaborate with government bodies, technology experts, and animal welfare organisations to develop it further and eventually transform it into a fully functional mobile application.

Acknowledging that she does not have a technical background, Sarah is actively seeking support to scale the project. For her, the motivation is simple: even helping a single animal in time would make the effort worthwhile.

Her message remains clear—no animal should be left without help, especially during difficult times.
