Environment Canada issues heat warning for Greater Toronto Area

Toronto and surrounding areas are set to experience the first major heat event of the year as warmer temperatures arrive across the Greater Toronto Area.

Environment Canada has issued a yellow heat warning for Toronto, Vaughan, Richmond Hill, Markham, Mississauga, and Brampton starting Monday afternoon and continuing through Tuesday night.

Forecasters say daytime temperatures are expected to climb to around 30°C, with humid conditions making it feel closer to 36°C. Overnight temperatures are expected to remain between 18°C and 20°C.

Environment Canada meteorologist Kristina Kretchman said the sudden jump in temperatures may feel especially intense following a stretch of cooler-than-normal weather, although heat waves during this time of year are not uncommon.

She explained that a warm air mass moving north from the United States is bringing increased heat and humidity into Ontario.

Officials are urging residents to watch for symptoms of heat-related illnesses such as headaches, dizziness, nausea, confusion, and severe fatigue.

Residents are also being advised to stay hydrated, reduce direct sun exposure, keep indoor spaces cool by using blinds and air conditioning, and open windows when appropriate.

In response to the heat warning, the City of Toronto announced that its heat relief strategy has been activated.

The city said more than 380 park water fountains and 247 public park washrooms are currently open across Toronto. Additional mobile water trailers will also be available at Nathan Phillips Square, Mel Lastman Square, East York Civic Centre, and Etobicoke Civic Centre from Monday afternoon.

Meanwhile, 168 splash pads across the city will operate from dawn until dusk during the heat event, while 112 additional shelter spaces are also being made available for residents in need.
