The Roy-Tho Airbus: Uniting Royalists and Thomians in Grand Style

The annual ‘Battle of the Blues,’ also known as the Royal-Thomian big match, stood as a testament to the enduring tradition and fervent rivalry between Royal College Colombo and S. Thomas’ College in Sri Lanka. This historic cricketing event, revered as one of the oldest and most significant in the country, evoked a sense of pride and camaraderie among alumni and fans alike.

In the year of our recounting, the excitement surrounding the 145th Battle of the Blues reached new heights with the inaugural Roy-Tho Airbus journey. Organized by the visionary members of the Royal College group of 2004, this extraordinary voyage transcended borders and generations, uniting Royalists and Thomians in a memorable journey from Melbourne to Colombo.

The brainchild of the project, comprised of passionate alumni from both schools, the Roy-Tho Airbus initiative aimed to reignite the spirit of fellowship and nostalgia among expatriates residing in Australia and New Zealand. Through a partnership with Sri Lankan Airlines, the committee orchestrated a seamless travel experience, culminating in a grand reunion at the SSC grounds in Colombo from the 7th to the 9th of March.

As the countdown to departure began, anticipation mounted among the 80 Royalists and Thomians, accompanied by their families, who embarked on this special journey. Each traveler was greeted with complimentary goodies, including bespoke ‘Royal-Thomian Airbus’ t-shirts and event souvenirs, courtesy of the organizing committee.

The flight was a unique experience, with fellow Royalists serving as captains and a mixed crew representing both schools. Upon touchdown at BIA-Katunayake, a warm welcome awaited, complete with a separate customs clearance counter for the Roy-Tho Airbus passengers.

The journey’s success would not have been possible without the generous support of the main sponsor, Shawn Mendis Lawyers & Mendis and Gibson Lawyers Australia. Their commitment to fostering community bonds and preserving tradition was commendable and deeply appreciated.

Furthermore, gratitude was extended to the valued partners, including Amberley Graphics for their marketing and printing expertise, as well as Crazy Jets for their assistance with ticketing arrangements. Additionally, collaboration with Transco Travels ensured that travelers enjoyed exclusive hotel and leisure deals, adding to the overall experience.

In closing, the Roy-Tho Airbus journey symbolized more than just a flight; it represented a celebration of heritage, friendship, and the enduring legacy of two esteemed schools. As anticipation for the 145th Battle of the Blues mounted, it was evident that no distance was too great when it came to uniting Royalists and Thomians in grand style.
