Upcoming Lord of the Rings project in development

After 33 years of late-night hosting, Stephen Colbert is trading his desk for Middle-earth. With CBS ending his show this May, the longtime Tolkien enthusiast is officially moving forward with a new Lord of the Rings project, reportedly titled The Lord of the Rings: Shadow of the Past.

The film plans to explore chapters three through eight of The Fellowship of the Ring, parts Colbert feels were underrepresented in Peter Jackson’s original trilogy. He has assured Jackson that the story will remain faithful to J.R.R. Tolkien’s source material while fitting seamlessly into the cinematic universe fans already know and love. Colbert revealed that he had nurtured the idea for years but only now, with his schedule freed, was able to pitch it.

The story will jump fourteen years after Frodo’s departure, following Sam, Merry, and Pippin retracing early adventures, while Sam’s daughter Elanor uncovers a hidden secret that nearly derailed the War of the Ring. Colbert will collaborate with legendary Philippa Boyens, who helped write the original trilogy, to ensure the script captures the authentic Middle-earth magic.

Fan reactions have been mixed, with some expressing skepticism over extending the story: “Lord of the Rings has no sequel,” one wrote, while another asked, “Who asked for this?”

For context, Jackson’s original trilogy (2001–2003) brought Tolkien’s epic to life with an ensemble cast including Elijah Wood as Frodo, Ian McKellen as Gandalf, Viggo Mortensen as Aragorn, Sean Astin as Sam, and Sean Bean as Boromir, alongside John Rhys-Davies, Orlando Bloom, Billy Boyd, Dominic Monaghan, Cate Blanchett, Christopher Lee, Hugo Weaving, Liv Tyler, and Andy Serkis. The theatrical cuts of the trilogy run about 9 hours and 18 minutes, while the Extended Editions total approximately 11 hours and 22 minutes.
