SriLankan Airlines has had its safety rating downgraded from seven to six stars by AirlineRatings.com, the Australia-based agency whose assessments are widely used by travellers around the world when choosing which airlines to fly with.
The rating change has been reflected on the agency’s platform, though no official explanation has been given for why the revision was made.
This is not the first time the national carrier has faced such a setback.
In 2024, the airline received the same six-star rating following an alleged incident in which a captain reportedly locked his female co-pilot out of the flight deck during a ten-hour flight from Sydney to Colombo aboard an Airbus A330.
The latest downgrade comes at a sensitive time for SriLanka Airlines, as safety ratings play a significant role in shaping passenger confidence and travel decisions.
In today’s aviation landscape, modern passengers increasingly rely on independent safety assessments when choosing airlines, making such rating changes potentially impactful for business and brand perception.
SriLankan Airlines has not yet issued an official statement regarding the downgrade.
