Sri Lanka’s Tourism Sector Continues Growth, Earning US$ 256.7 Million in April

Sri Lanka’s tourism industry sustained its upward momentum in April 2025, recording US$ 256.7 million in earnings—a 13.7% year-on-year increase. The month also welcomed 174,678 international visitors, marking a 17.3% rise from April 2024 and making it one of the strongest off-peak months in recent history.

From January to April, total tourism earnings reached US$ 1.379 billion, up 10.2% compared to the same period in 2024. Tourist arrivals over the four months stood at 896,884, a 14.3% increase, showing continued recovery and renewed global interest in Sri Lanka as a travel destination.

As of April’s end, Sri Lanka had achieved 30% of its 2025 arrival goal and just under 28% of its revenue target (US$ 5 billion). However, a slight mismatch between the rate of visitor arrivals and revenue growth hints at lower average spending per tourist.

Experts say this trend highlights the need for greater tourism diversification, especially in wellness, experiential travel, and long-stay packages. Tourism, alongside remittances and apparel, remains a vital pillar of the country’s economic recovery—particularly following the sector’s collapse during the pandemic and economic crisis.

Now firmly on the rebound, tourism continues to support Sri Lanka’s balance of payments and macroeconomic stability.
