Sri Lanka’s New Ambassador to the UAE, Arusha Cooray, Takes Office

On May 21, 2025, Arusha Cooray officially assumed her role as the Ambassador-designate of Sri Lanka to the United Arab Emirates at the Embassy in Abu Dhabi.

In her introductory address to the Embassy staff, Ambassador Cooray emphasized the long-standing and growing ties between Sri Lanka and the UAE, built on strong economic, cultural, and community connections. She expressed her commitment to deepening partnerships in trade, investment, labour relations, education, renewable energy, and innovation, while strengthening the enduring friendship between the two countries.

Ambassador Cooray also pledged to deliver high-quality consular services and to engage actively with the vibrant Sri Lankan community living across the Emirates. She reaffirmed the Embassy’s dedication to promoting Sri Lanka’s interests and expanding bilateral collaboration with the UAE.

A highly accomplished economist and academic, Professor Cooray has more than 20 years of experience in teaching, research, and international development. Before her appointment, she was Professor of Finance and Head of Discipline at James Cook University and served as a senior advisor to global institutions.

She holds a PhD in Economics from the University of New South Wales and has an extensive publication record in areas such as development economics, financial markets, governance, and macroeconomic policy.
