Dr. Asha de Vos, the renowned marine biologist from Sri Lanka, was honoured at the United Nations General Assembly during the opening ceremony marking International Women’s Day and the 70th session of the Commission on the Status of Women (CSW70).
Her portrait, photographed by Bre Hartman, was featured as part of the UNGA President’s campaign celebrating women who have broken barriers and defied expectations. Alongside her image, de Vos shared a powerful statement: “They told me I was not capable – so I made a discovery that changed the world.”
Dr. de Vos said her message is meant to inspire women everywhere, highlighting that determination and courage can open doors for future generations who may have doubted their own potential.
Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs Arun Hemachandra congratulated de Vos and UN Women Sri Lanka, praising her achievement as a reminder of the importance of empowering women to challenge limits, break barriers, and contribute to science and society. In a statement on X, he added: “We commend all those who continue to support women leaders, researchers, and innovators who bring pride to our nation.”
