Historic debut for Sri Lanka at international pentathlon event

The Modern Pentathlon Federation of Sri Lanka (MPFSL) will send a team to compete for the first time at the 2026 Pentathlon World Cup, taking place from April 8 to 12 at the Cairo International Stadium Complex in Egypt.

This marks a significant milestone for modern pentathlon in Sri Lanka, a sport that has grown steadily over the past eight years despite facing challenges related to limited infrastructure and resources.

Sri Lanka earned its place at the tournament through strong performances in recent Asian competitions. Representing the nation are athletes Oshada de Silva, Sachini Rathnathilaka, and Gayani Dasanayake, with Iroshan Kumara serving as the team official.

Modern pentathlon, an Olympic discipline, tests athletes across fencing, swimming, obstacle racing, shooting, and running, requiring exceptional endurance, skill, and versatility.

Officials emphasized that this debut not only raises Sri Lanka’s profile in the international sports arena but also paves the way for potential Olympic qualification and inspires aspiring athletes across the country.
