Low-Pressure System Set to Move Away from Sri Lanka in 48 Hours

A low-pressure system currently positioned to the northeast of Sri Lanka is forecast to gradually move away from the island over the next 48 hours, according to the latest update from the Department of Meteorology.

Despite the expected shift, unsettled weather conditions are likely to continue across several parts of the country in the short term.

Showers and Thunderstorms Across Multiple Regions

The Met Department says intermittent showers or thundershowers can be expected in the Western, Sabaragamuwa, Central, North-Western, and Northern provinces, as well as in the districts of Anuradhapura, Galle, and Matara.

In some areas particularly in the Western and Sabaragamuwa provinces and in Puttalam, Galle, and Matara rainfall could be intense, with totals exceeding 100mm at times.

Afternoon Showers in Uva

Meanwhile, the Uva Province may experience isolated showers or thunderstorms later in the day, especially after 1:00 p.m., as atmospheric conditions remain unstable.

Public Advised to Take Precautions

Authorities have urged residents to remain cautious, especially during thunderstorms. Temporary strong winds and lightning could pose risks, and the public is advised to take necessary safety measures to reduce potential damage.
