Sri Lanka is contemplating a substantial policy change in its overseas employment strategy, as the Minister of Labour and Foreign Employment calls for proposals to cease sending women abroad as housemaids. Emphasizing the need for a shift towards higher-paying skilled roles, the Minister urged stakeholders to submit plans to facilitate this transition.
During discussions with the Association of Licensed Foreign Employment Agencies, the Minister stressed the importance of garnering input from all stakeholders to develop comprehensive proposals. The aim is to entirely eliminate the practice of Sri Lankan women migrating overseas for domestic work within the next decade and create avenues for them to pursue employment in skilled domains instead.
