Sri Lanka Cabinet Approves Use of English Language in Designated Courts

The Sri Lankan Cabinet has greenlit measures to introduce the English language for legal proceedings and record-keeping in specific courts across the country, citing the need to streamline commercial activities and address delays in settling disputes.

The Sri Lankan Cabinet has endorsed initiatives to incorporate the English language for conducting legal proceedings and maintaining records in certain courts, aiming to streamline commercial activities and alleviate delays in resolving disputes.

According to the government, the prevalent use of English in commerce-related matters poses challenges in translating content into Sinhala, leading to prolonged settlement periods for commercial disputes. This situation not only hampers entrepreneur engagement but also adversely impacts Sri Lanka’s ranking in the Ease of Doing Business index, reflecting the country’s business conduciveness.

In response, the Cabinet has deemed it fitting to authorize the Minister of Justice, with Cabinet approval and in line with constitutional provisions, to issue an order allowing the use of English in all activities within recognized courts or legal records as specified. This measure aims to expedite proceedings and enhance the business environment in Sri Lanka.

Consequently, the Cabinet has greenlit the proposal put forth by the Minister of Justice to initiate necessary actions in this regard, signaling a proactive approach towards facilitating smoother legal processes and bolstering the country’s commercial landscape.
