Sri Lanka officially launched the “Surakimu Lanka” national programme yesterday (29), aiming to encourage citizens to adopt more responsible and efficient energy usage habits.
According to the President’s Media Division (PMD), the initiative seeks to build a community that conserves energy resources carefully, especially in light of potential disruptions to fuel and electricity supplies caused by the ongoing conflicts in the Middle East. Future El Niño weather forecasts have also been taken into account in planning the programme.
The government has stressed the importance of using state resources with maximum efficiency and transparency. A key goal of “Surakimu Lanka” is to actively involve the public in ensuring national energy security. The programme is set to run for five months.
As part of the “Clean Sri Lanka” initiative, which aligns with the vision “A Thriving Nation – a Beautiful Life”, the programme will operate under the theme “Surakimu Lanka – Let’s Unite, Let’s Shine Bright”, the PMD noted. Participation is expected from state and semi-government institutions, private sector organizations, civil society groups, and the general public.
Under this initiative, citizens are encouraged to reduce electricity usage during peak hours (6:00 p.m. – 10:00 p.m.) or shift high-energy activities to daytime hours whenever possible. Importantly, the programme does not impose mandatory restrictions on electricity consumption; it focuses on voluntary, mindful energy use.
The ultimate aim of “Surakimu Lanka” is to cultivate a mindset of energy conservation among the public and foster voluntary participation in using energy efficiently, according to the PMD.
