The Ministry of Justice and National Integration today (02) unveiled a newly developed Management Information System (MIS) alongside an upgraded official website, marking a key step in efforts to modernise Sri Lanka’s justice sector and improve efficiency, transparency, and accountability.
The MIS was introduced under the Support to Justice Sector Project (JURE), funded by the European Union in collaboration with the Ministry. The initiative has been carried out with the support of UNDP and UNICEF Sri Lanka, and also includes enhancements to the Ministry’s website as part of a broader push towards digital transformation in the justice system.
The new system is aimed at streamlining the appointment process for several important roles within the justice sector, including Commissioners of Oaths, Inquirers into Sudden Deaths, Justices of the Peace, Unofficial Magistrates, and Sworn Translators. By establishing clearer procedures and stronger selection standards, the MIS is expected to improve transparency, ensure integrity, and minimise administrative delays.
In addition, the system enhances data management capabilities within the Ministry by enabling better record-keeping, smoother information sharing, and improved coordination between institutions. This will support more informed decision-making and contribute to more efficient public service delivery.
Meanwhile, the revamped website features a user-friendly Citizen Services Information Portal, offering easy access to information on key justice-related services. These include legal aid, mediation, arbitration, debt conciliation, as well as victim and witness protection services, helping the public better understand and access available support.
The website also showcases the “Know Your Neethi” legal education video series, a flagship communication initiative under the JURE programme aimed at improving public awareness of legal rights and responsibilities. By presenting complex legal concepts in a simplified manner, the series seeks to strengthen legal literacy among citizens.
Officials from the Ministry of Justice, the European Union, and UNDP, speaking at the launch event, highlighted the importance of digital innovation in strengthening governance and expanding access to justice. They noted that the introduction of the MIS and the updated website represents a significant move toward a more transparent, accountable, and citizen-focused justice system in Sri Lanka.
