The Government Medical Officers’ Association (GMOA) has announced that doctors across all state hospitals in Sri Lanka will participate in a 24-hour token strike starting at 8:00 a.m. on April 2.
This follows the nationwide token strike that began on March 31, which was organized to raise concerns over several issues, including disputes over alleged unlawful transfers of medical personnel.
During a Cabinet press briefing on March 31, Minister of Health and Mass Media Dr. Nalinda Jayatissa addressed the strike, stating that the government is actively working on formalizing a transfer system for medical officers.
Dr. Jayatissa highlighted that approximately 6,000 doctors are scheduled for transfers by May 10, with the process having begun in early February. He added that the transfer initiative aims to ensure fairness for doctors who have previously faced inequities in allocation decisions.
