Bimal Prasanna Wijesinghe has been elected as the new President of the Sri Lanka Athletics Association (SLAA) during the association’s Annual General Meeting (AGM) today. His election marks a significant step toward strengthening athletics governance and development in the country.
Wijesinghe brings extensive experience in sports administration, having held key leadership and advisory roles in various national sports organizations. His deep understanding of managing athletes, competitions, and organizational operations makes him well-equipped to guide the SLAA toward modernization and growth.
In his acceptance speech, Wijesinghe emphasized his commitment to transparency, collaboration, and athlete-focused policies. He highlighted the importance of improving training facilities, providing financial and technical support to athletes, and expanding grassroots programs to discover and nurture young talent across Sri Lanka.
Under his leadership, the SLAA plans to implement an updated strategic plan for 2026–2030, focusing on talent development, international competition preparation, and community engagement to popularize athletics across the country.
Athletics enthusiasts, athletes, and sports commentators have welcomed his appointment, expressing optimism that his experience, vision, and commitment to athlete welfare will bring fresh energy and direction to Sri Lanka’s athletics program.
